this year, consider giving a gift that goes beyond the holiday season: a 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 to 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 . perfect for families, nature lovers, or someone who seems to have everything, a garden 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 opens the door to a year filled with beauty, discovery and connection with nature. it’s a thoughtful way to share the joy of spending time outdoors and exploring all the garden has to offer.

with events like soar – tropical butterflies and traveling exhibits (like last year’s thomas dambo’s trolls: save the humans), there’s always something new to experience. families can also enjoy seasonal programs like lunar new year and sunset series, while those seeking a peaceful escape will love the serene paths and inspiring landscapes. 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 includes discounted or free tickets to our exhibits, programs and events throughout the year.

for those who love to travel or explore, 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 offers reciprocal access to more than 360 gardens nationwide, including many here in california. it’s an invitation to discover new places, connect with nature, and enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors. members also receive perks like discounts at select local nurseries.

a garden 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 is more than just access to our 87 acres — it’s an invitation to enjoy experiences and take adventures that inspire, connect and create lasting memories. it’s a gift that keeps giving, offering something to look forward to year-round.

as we move through november, we’re filled with gratitude and pride as we reflect on the past year. at 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 , our mission is to connect all to the wonders of nature and this year we’ve done just that through our exciting events and exhibits. thanks to the incredible support from our donors, sponsors, and community, we’ve created new experiences and reimagined cherished traditions.

connecting people to nature is at the heart of everything we do, and our programming truly showcases this. this year, we hosted two exhibits, three exciting monthly programs, dozens of workshops and a number of truly special member events. each brings our community closer to each other and nature. february saw our second annual lunar new year celebration, where we celebrated the year of the dragon with vibrant performances, delicious food and fun crafts. in may, spring blossomed with our bloom! exhibit and the reopening of soar – tropical butterflies. summer came alive with our fourth annual sunset series, welcoming visitors to enjoy thursday evenings filled with music and food under the night sky. october brought our first-ever dogtoberfest, a month-long event that delighted over 14,000 visitors and their furry friends with beer tastings, dog treats and plenty of garden fun.

none of this would have been possible without our sponsors and visitors. our sponsors’ support allows us to create inspiring and memorable experiences, turning the garden into a place where creativity and nature come together. their commitment helps us invite guests to explore and connect with the wonders of the natural world in unique and meaningful ways.

and to our visitors and members, you are at the heart of it all. whether you join us for an exhibit, attend an event, sign up for a workshop or take a peaceful stroll through the garden, your presence drives us. each of you reminds us why our mission matters. your visits and support inspire us to keep growing, innovating and enhancing the garden.

thank you for making this year so special. we can’t wait to show you what’s coming in 2025 and look forward to welcoming you back for even more amazing experiences in the garden!

the garden is a community resource that offers unique opportunities for everyone to connect with the wonders of nature. from annual events like lunar new year and soar – tropical butterflies to the vibrant plant displays and care we put into the garden, every day is an adventure for our guests. none of this would be possible without the support of our community and members. if you’re looking for a way to give back and help us continue creating nature-inspired experiences, here are seven ways to support the garden.

7 ways to support the garden

  1. become a member: becoming a member is a meaningful way to support the garden while enjoying a variety of perks. your 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 helps sustain the garden, and in return, you receive a year of free admission and discounts on exhibits, events, workshops and items at the kiosk. plus, 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 extends beyond our garden, giving you access to over 300 botanic gardens nationwide and a discount at select local nurseries. whether for yourself or as a thoughtful gift, a 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 is a great way to stay connected to nature and support the community. click here to learn more about 2022卡塔尔世界杯32强抽签 .
  2. volunteer: as a volunteer, you’re not only supporting the garden, you’re also playing a key role in sharing the beauty of nature with our community. whether through hands-on gardening or engaging with visitors, volunteers help us create memorable experiences that inspire care for the environment. if you’re 15 or older and excited to get involved, we’d love to have you! click here to learn more about volunteering at the garden.
  3. sign up for a garden workshop experience: another fun way to support the garden is by joining one of our garden workshop experiences. bring some friends along and make it a mini celebration! the best part? all proceeds from the workshops go directly back into supporting the garden. it’s a great way to learn something new, have a good time and give back to the place you love. want to join a garden workshop? click here
  4. purchase an item from the kiosk: when you shop at our kiosk, your purchase helps support the garden, and our inventory is always changing! with the holidays around the corner, it’s a great spot to find unique stocking stuffers or gifts. plus, we’ve got a variety of plants to choose from. instead of shopping at a big chain store, you can find something special here and feel good knowing your purchase helps a local botanic garden.
  5. share about your visit: another great way to support the garden is by following us on social media and sharing your visit with your friends! you might introduce the garden to someone who hasn’t discovered it but would love it. you can find us on facebook (@scbgarden), instagram (@scbgarden) and tiktok (@scbgarden).
  6. fill out the post visit surveys: guest feedback helps drive change in the garden. by filling out our post-visit surveys, you help us improve and create even better experiences for everyone. your feedback truly makes a difference!
  7. donate to our flourish fund: the most sizable way to support the garden is with a donation. donations help keep day-to-day operations running smoothly and create unique nature experiences for our visitors. your contribution also allows us to bring in exciting exhibits that our community might not otherwise get to enjoy. every donation, big or small, makes a real difference and helps us continue to grow and inspire with nature. interested in making a donation to our flourish fund? click here.

don’t: feel like you have to spend hours cooking and cleaning on saturday or sunday.

do: make it easy on yourself and grab a bite at dottie’s by the koi pond on the weekends. it’s a unique and relaxing spot to enjoy a meal surrounded by the garden’s beauty. whether you’re having a small friendsgiving meetup or just unwinding over good food, dottie’s adds that perfect touch of cozy garden charm without the cleanup!

this friendsgiving, focus less on the details and more on sharing good times with the people you care about. by joining us for any of these workshops, grabbing a picnic or meal at the garden, you’ll get to enjoy a festive setup without the prep or the cleanup. relax, have fun, and let us help make your holiday season easier and more enjoyable.

we’re entering a time of year where friend gatherings become more frequent. whether it’s a friendsgiving, a holiday party or just an impromptu get-together, you don’t want to show up empty-handed! bringing a small, thoughtful gift is a wonderful way to thank your host for all the time and effort they put into making everyone feel welcome. if you’re looking for something unique and heartfelt, swing by the garden’s kiosk to pick out a special gift. we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites below.

1. our beautiful (and useful!) tote bags – who couldn’t use another tote bag?! these totes are a stylish and a sustainable way to “wrap” a bottle of wine or carry a few treats if you’re bringing a dish to share. and once the gathering is over, the tote bag can be reused for a variety of purposes. it’s a little gift that just keeps on giving.

2. a coffee book about plants: for plant lovers, you can’t go wrong with one of our coffee table books about plants. coffee table books are classic gifts that spark conversations. plus, it’s a thoughtful way to show you appreciate their love for greenery, and it’ll make a wonderful addition to their home.

3. a new addition to their garden: if you want to give something truly memorable, consider some spring flower bulbs! these bulbs can be planted now, and by spring, they’ll add a splash of color to your host’s garden. it’s a gift that grows and keeps the memory of your appreciation alive long after the gathering. watching those flowers bloom is a joyful reminder of a thoughtful gift.

these are just a few of the items we have at the kiosk, located in palm circle. it’s best to come in person and shop around. and every gift purchased from the kiosk helps support our garden. so, the next time you’re heading to a gathering, come pick out a gift that’s meaningful and supports our local space — it’s a win-win for all!

looking for a creative and relaxing way to spend time with friends or family? join us for hummingbird flights: make your own feeder, where you’ll create and decorate your own hummingbird feeder from a recycled wine bottle, sip seasonal wines and learn tips for attracting these delightful pollinators to your garden. this workshop, happening saturday, november 9, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., is perfect for anyone looking to add a splash of life to their garden while enjoying a little paint-and-sip fun!

much like a classic paint-and-sip class, hummingbird flights is all about letting loose and having fun with friends. guests will receive three 3-oz wine tasters to enjoy as you personalize your feeder with a unique design. skilled instructors will guide you through the feeder-making process and offer pro tips on mixing up the best hummingbird nectar and which flowers will bring even more of these amazing creatures to your garden. it’s a hands-on way to learn about hummingbirds and their favorite blooms while creating something special to take home.

this class is designed to bring a little extra joy to your outdoor space while giving you insider tips on creating a hummingbird haven. as you sip and paint, you’ll learn the basics of feeder maintenance and how to keep the hummingbirds coming back for more. not only will you make a feeder that looks beautiful in your garden, but you’ll also help support the pollinator population.

“this workshop is one of my favorites because it really connects people to the garden in a unique way,” says claire griswold, the garden’s learning and engagement manager. “when you walk through our 87 acres, you’ll almost always see hummingbirds flying around. now, you can learn more about these beautiful creatures while creating your own unique feeder. and you don’t have to be a professional painter, you can go as big or as small as you’d like and you’ll still leave with a feeder to attract them to your own yard and new knowledge!”

so, grab a friend or family member and come share in the fun! the workshop is $36 for members and $40 for non-members, and includes all materials, garden admission and three wine tasters. whether you’re a garden enthusiast or just looking for a unique afternoon out, hummingbird flights is the perfect way to relax, create, and learn together. cheers to hummingbirds, creativity and a wonderful time!

this week’s dog tales is all about overall wellness for both you and your furry friends! as we enter the final weekend of dogtoberfest, we are excited to bring you two fantastic classes that focus on peace and bonding with your pet.

on saturday at 9 a.m., christina kubacki from pawmaste pet sitting will lead doga (dog yoga). doga is a unique way to enjoy a 30-minute yoga class with your dog. “all levels are welcome. you can learn some moves to help your pet stretch after a long walk,” explains christina. “no worries if your pet isn’t interested in participating, they can just lie there with you.” participation in the class is free with a dogtobefest ticket. be sure to bring a mat or blanket.

christina has been running her pet care business for 15 years, offering services such as dog walking, pet sitting, nail trimming and, of course, doga classes. “i love animals and worked at a vet clinic, so it made sense to continue my love for animals,” christina shares.

we’re gearing up for weekend three of dogtoberfest, and we’re thrilled to have disc dogs in southern california back for two more days of incredible performances! catch these amazing pups in action on october 19 and 20 at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. — it’s a show you won’t want to miss!

since 1997, disc dogs in southern california has been thrilling audiences with high-flying, frisbee-catching pups, and this year’s dogtoberfest is no exception. cheryl kamikubo, the demonstration show coordinator, gave us a peek into the exciting world of disc dogs, their performances and the love for dogs that keeps the group soaring. “we provide frisbee dog demonstrations for private events, city festivals and charity events,” cheryl shared. “we mostly perform at dog-themed events, like the fantastic dogtoberfest!”

“we’re the premiere frisbee dog club in california,” cheryl explained. the club was formed by “a group of dog-loving enthusiasts whose dogs were crazy about playing frisbee.” since then, many of their members have become world champions, and you may have seen them on tv, in commercials, or performing at major sporting events like the mlb all-star game and ucla halftime shows.

but at the heart of the group is the love for dogs and a passion for keeping them happy and healthy. their main goal “is to have fun with their dogs while promoting the sport of canine frisbee as a great way to keep family pets happy and healthy,” cheryl said. disc dogs also hosts frisbee dog training clinics and competitions throughout the year, offering a great chance for both seasoned pros and newcomers to get involved.

our show will consist of segments showing you the step-by-step basics on how to train your dog to be a frisbee dog, a fun disc dog race and many ‘freestyle’ routines performed to music where you can see the dogs do spins in the air and soar off their handler’s backs all while catching the disc!” cheryl enthused. “it’s going to be a doggone good time, so don’t miss it!”

so whether you’re a long-time frisbee dog fan or a curious newcomer, be sure to check out disc dogs in southern california at dogtoberfest this weekend to see these incredible pups in action!

get ready for a spook-tacular adventure with our parent and me: bug expedition – web walk workshop—just in time for halloween! this time, we’re focusing on spiders and their incredible webs, perfect for the season of all things spooky. every fall, these eight-legged architects get busy weaving intricate webs of all shapes and sizes. some, like the orb weavers, spin large webs that can stretch up to three feet wide! and if you’re lucky, you might spot a trashline orb weaver, cleverly camouflaged by pieces of debris in its web. join us friday, october 18 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. for our parent and me: bug expedition to learn more about how they make their webs.

our parent and me: bug expedition workshops are designed to spark curiosity in junior entomologists as they explore the fascinating world of bugs. bugs play an essential role in our ecosystem—pollinating plants, aerating soil, breaking down waste, and maintaining environmental balance. during this hands-on workshop, children will create their own bug identification guides, which they can use at 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 or even in their own backyard! equipped with magnifying glasses, notebooks, pencils, and crayons (all supplies provided), participants will record their observations as they embark on this exciting exploration. and don’t worry—rain or shine, the expedition will go on!

join us to foster a love for insects and inspire the next generation of bug enthusiasts while celebrating the magic of spiders this halloween season!

this week’s dog tales feature shines a spotlight on kathy clarke, the creative force behind glow pups, a brand bringing joy and style to the lives of our furry friends. founded in april 2021, glow pups specializes in a playful, colorful and durable collection of dog essentials, accessories and toys. from energetic pups who love to chew and play to cuddlers in need of a cozy companion, glow pups has something for every dog.

“we’ve crafted a collection of bright, fun and stylish dog essentials, accessories and toys that bring joy and comfort to your furry friends,” kathy explains. “our toys are designed to engage and entertain dogs of all sizes, while our braided leashes, chic beds and pet teepees provide the perfect retreat after a long day of play.”

glow pups also offers vacuum-insulated bowls that keep water cold and pet food fresh, making it both functional and fashionable for pets and their owners.

kathy’s journey into the pet industry began long before glow pups was created. “i grew up on a farm and have always loved dogs,” she says. after running a dog-walking business for eight years, kathy sold it to spend more time with her kids. but during the pandemic, she felt a pull back to her love of animals. “with newfound time on my hands and a passion for supporting animals in need, glow pups was born,” she adds.

what makes glow pups even more special is its commitment to giving back with a portion of its proceeds going directly to caring for foster animals and shelter dogs. glow pups also donates toys, beds and essentials to shelters and rescue organizations.

when asked what dogtoberfest guests can expect from her booth, kathy shared, “we’ll have a variety of items, including leashes, collars, dog bowls, beds, playful plush toys and teepees.” each product is designed with love and care, ensuring that dogs not only look great but also have the comfort and playtime they deserve.

kathy also has a special canine companion of her own, a dog named jane.  kathy’s love for dogs shines through in everything she does, and it’s clear she has a deep appreciation for the bond between humans and their pets. “dogs’ loyalty, their unique personalities, and their ability to find joy in the little things like a walk or playtime—it never ceases to amaze me,” she says.

be sure to visit glow pups at the doggy marketplace during dogtoberfest for stylish, high-quality products that both you and your pup will love, all while supporting a brand that gives back to animals in need.

below is a sneak peek of the items kathy plans to bring!

september is here, and the school year is in full swing. the days are now filled with learning and mental growth, but it’s important to find balance. after hours of sitting in class, young minds might be tired, but those little bodies can still be full of energy. that’s why spending time outdoors exploring, exercising or simply enjoying nature is the perfect way to recharge.  whether it’s meeting up with friends for a quick play date, taking a walk, or enjoying an afternoon snack outside, here are three reasons to visit the garden with your children after school:

  1. release extra energy: jumping straight from schoolwork to homework can be tough. kids often have excess energy, making it hard to focus. a walk through the garden or a run through our meadows is the perfect way to help kids unwind and release that extra energy before settling in for the evening.
  2. fresh air and vitamin d: after hours indoors, there’s nothing like getting outside for fresh air. plus, spending time in the sun is a great way to boost your levels of vitamin d, which is essential to many of your body’s functions. since vitamin d isn’t found in many foods, soaking up the sun — even for just a few minutes — can make a big difference. if you want to combine study time with some sun, the tables and chairs near the living wall are perfect for tackling homework while enjoying the outdoors.
  3. a chance to slow down: while physical activity is important, slowing down has its own benefits. nature provides the perfect setting to relax and recharge. whether it’s a peaceful walk around the dorothy and john bohannon rose garden, a picnic in the lower meadow, or visiting the fish at the koi pond, these moments of calm can help children decompress after a busy day of learning.
  4. enhanced learning: the many benefits of being in nature can enhance one’s ability to learn. according to a study published by the educational psychology review, “nature has the potential to relieve cognitive overload, reduce stress and increase wellbeing — all factors that are conducive to learning.”

dogtoberfest is almost here, and we’re excited to share all the fun we have planned! every weekend in october, you and your pup are invited to explore the garden’s 87 acres while enjoying a day packed with activities like free beer samplings during our pup crawl, a dance pawty, a doggy marketplace, an obstacle course, bavarian treats for purchase from dottie’s at the koi pond and more. to help you get familiar with the offerings, we’ve launched dog tales, a weekly spotlight on some of the amazing vendors participating in the doggy marketplace!

this week, we’re shining the spotlight on manny martinez, the creative mind behind wonderlight design, known for custom keychains, pins and personalized gifts. what began as a hobby during the pandemic blossomed into a full-fledged business three years ago. “i bought a laser engraver to stay busy during lockdown, and soon i was creating personalized gifts for friends and family,” manny shares. now, he runs an online store that takes orders from around the world.

for dogtoberfest, manny has something special in store: “i will have my small laser engraver and will be making custom orders for guests on the spot!” want your favorite picture of your pup engraved on an ornament? he can do it! maybe a keychain of their paw print? he can do that, too.

you will be able to find wonderlight design at dogtoberfest’s doggy marketplace every weekend in october. make sure to get your tickets in advance so you can come get your custom keepsake!

for the past eight years, we have hosted an exclusive event for our garden circle members called farm to table which allows these higher level members the chance to connect over a four-course meal and enjoy delightful entertainment. this year’s event is happening at the end of this month and features a theme that celebrates the intertwined relationship between art and botanic gardens. our special guest speaker is renowned kinetic artist patrick shearn, known for his monumental installations that create awe-inspiring, immersive experiences.

at this year’s farm to table, shearn will unveil his design for our newly commissioned sculpture, “shade of colors,” set to be placed in the marilyn and john long children and family garden. with over 30 years of experience, shearn has developed iconic pieces like “liquid shard” from his skynet series. his work has been showcased at high-profile events such as coachella, burning man, and the 2008 beijing olympics, captivating audiences worldwide and garnering viral recognition. shearn’s innovative approach, which focuses on the blend of art and nature, has earned coverage in major publications such as the new york times, rolling stone, the guardian, and more, highlighting his impact on contemporary art.

a full breakdown of the night’s events is below.

farm to table event details:

  • 5 p.m. social hour: start the evening with engaging activities and colorful tastings inspired by the garden’s vibrant hues. enjoy tray-passed cocktails and indulge in gourmet appetizers like grilled lamb chops with greek oregano and fresh lemon juice, coconut shrimp with a sweet and spicy orange dipping sauce, and bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with manchego cheese and drizzled with balsamic glaze. a grazing station will also feature imported and domestic artisian cheeses, farmers market seasonal vegetables, local farmers market fruit, hummus, farm-fresh dips, breads, crackers, and more.

  • 6 p.m. artist presentation: patrick shearn will showcase his work, including designs for the beijing olympics and coachella, before revealing his exclusive “shade of colors” sculpture for the garden.

  • 7 p.m. four-course dinner: savor a farm-forward menu framed by the dorothy and john bohannon rose garden. the first course features a btla salad wedge with farm fresh iceberg lettuce, spiced candied bacon, cut heirloom tomatoes, pickled onion croutons, shaved radish, and creamy avocado dressing. the main course is a duo of braised short ribs paired with pacific grilled seabass, seasoned with dill, kalamata olives, and lemon confit, served in a lemon and shallot white wine sauce. sides include olive oil-roasted rainbow potatoes and roasted vegetables like fresh zucchini, sunburst squash, french carrots, and peppers. a vegan option of cauliflower gnocchi with blistered grape tomatoes and local spinach is also available. end the evening with a napoleon pastry served with fresh local berries for dessert.

dogtoberfest is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to show you what’s in store! every weekend in october, you and your pup can come enjoy the garden’s 87 acres and a fun-filled day including free beer samplings along our pup crawl, a dance pawty, obstacle course, bavarian-inspired treats from dottie’s at the koi pond, a doggy marketplace, and more. to kick off the fun, we’re launching dog tales, a weekly feature showcasing some of the fantastic vendors that are participaring in the doggy marketplace.

first up is adele kaufman, an independent distributor for chala, a whimsical fashion brand known for its animal and nature-inspired products including handbags, wallets and keychains. adele, who has been selling chala for six years, shares, “i love chala’s high-quality, functional and playful designs, and i want to share them with others.”

chala is more than just fashion. like the garden, chala is dedicated to protecting nature. their products are made from peta-approved vegan leather, nylon, and cotton, and a portion of their annual profits supports charities like hearts and home animal rescue, the sloth conservation foundation, and the save our monarchs foundation.

we’re thrilled to have adele and chala at dogtoberfest, but her booth will only be open on october 13. be sure to get your tickets in advance so you can check out their adorable, socially-conscious designs! we’ve included a few items she plans to offer at the event in the photo above.

we are excited to announce a brand-new event, dogtoberfest! visitors are invited to bring their pups to the garden every saturday and sunday during october for this first annual event best described as beer festival meets dog parade.

“our dog walking hours on the last sunday of every month have become a favorite of both our staff and many of our guests, so we thought we would expand it into a month-long celebration, every weekend in october,” says adrienne nakashima, the garden’s chief executive officer. “our goal is to connect all to the wonders of nature through off-beat immersive experiences, and dogtoberfest fits that bill by being a fun spin on the traditional oktoberfest. yes, there will be beer, but, more importantly, there will be dogs!”

dogtoberfest will include four stations along a pup crawl where guests can enjoy free beer samplings (with full beers available for purchase). guests can also take a spin on the dancefloor with their pup during the dance pawty, shop at the doggy marketplace, show off their pup’s skills during an obstacle course, or head off on our self-guided bark walk to see some highlights from our tree collection. food and beverages, including bavarian-inspired treats, will be available for purchase at dottie’s at the koi pond.

there is also a vip ticket available for those who are looking to enhance their experience. being a vip ticket holder includes early entry into the garden, access to a vip biergarten, one free beer, a souvenir mug, pretzel necklace, dog biscuit, and a free 360-degree portrait from our photo booth.

“there’s something for everyone during this inaugural event of ours,” says nakashima. “whether you are a dog owner or just a fan of our furry friends, dogtoberfest is sure to entertain with its many offerings. not to mention, you get to explore the change of seasons within our beautiful garden.”

dogtoberfest is a timed-ticket event with three two-hour time slots available each day (morning, midday and afternoon). vip tickets allow guests to enter the time slot 30 minutes early. tickets are on sale now and are free for members and up to $15 for non-members, with all dogs costing $5. vip tickets are $20 for members and $35 for non-members.

with 87 acres of beauty to showcase, 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 has been the backdrop to countless movies, tv shows and music videos. with our diverse plants and landscapes, we can transform into almost any setting, with convenient access to electricity and other amenities. just 45 minutes from los angeles, the garden offers an ideal outdoor location for studios, brands and individuals seeking a unique and flexible space for upcoming projects. during our slower seasons, filming contracts help boost the garden’s revenue stream to ensure we can continue building our permanent collections and bringing programs to the garden that connect all to the wonders of nature. plus, we love showing off the garden! interested? here we answer some frequently asked questions regarding filming in the garden.

filming faq

  1. what types of filming locations do you offer?: we provide a variety of locations that showcase a diverse array of flora and fauna, making them ideal backdrops for any scene. our front 40 acres feature lush green lawns, vibrant floral gardens and unique plant groupings that are perfect for more polished, manicured settings. the back 40 acres offer a wilder, more untamed environment, ideal for woodsy or jungle-themed scenes. additionally, we have several versatile spaces that serve as a blank canvas, perfect for customized film shoots.

  2. how secure are the filming locations?: the garden’s rangers work closely with the client’s security to ensure the set is fully closed to the public if that is desired. the entire garden is gated and surrounded by dense brush, creating a natural barrier between the garden and the outside streets. our towering tree line also helps prevent aerial views. and our entrances are locked after hours to further control access. during public hours, we provide clear directional signage and alternative routes for our garden visitors to ensure they do not interfere with filming activities.

  3. what about noise levels from surrounding areas?: sound bleed is minimal here, despite our location near crenshaw and rolling hills road. the garden is nestled in one of los angeles’ quietest neighborhoods, providing a peaceful atmosphere that’s ideal for filming without disruptive background noise.

  4. what additional benefits come with filming at the garden?: we pride ourselves on our flexibility, collaboration and willingness to work closely with clients to bring their vision to life. while we’re open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., we offer exclusive access to the garden after hours, allowing for uninterrupted filming. our team is committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless experience, from initial planning to the final shoot.

  5. can sets be constructed on-site?: yes, sets can be constructed on-site, and we’ll work with you during the initial logistics meeting to discuss your specific needs. the timeline for construction is flexible and can be tailored to your budget. we offer various rates for load-in days, shoot days and strike days. in some cases, sets may need to be built off-site and then assembled on location.

  6. what is the parking situation like?: parking availability varies depending on the day of the week and the time of year. our team will assist with routing vehicles on-site to ensure efficient use of space.

  7. is there room for an on-site basecamp?: the size and duration of your basecamp will determine whether it can be accommodated on the premises. if needed, we have an arrangement with torrance memorial, located just 2 miles away, to rent out part of their parking lot for long-term basecamps.

we’re wrapping up our last sunset series with an homage to the final days of summer. ride the tide is bringing the sunny sounds of california surf and beach music to sunset series’ surf night on august 29.

ride the tide is comprised of “professional musicians/singers and been together for 20+ cool rockin’ surfing years,” says dwight paul kennedy, the band’s leader who also plays guitar and vocals. and they have performed around the globe, or as dwight likes to put it, “from sea to shining sea!”

california surf and beach music is known for its signature harmony vocals, catchy guitar riffs and high reverberation levels. ride the tide is planning on performing surfer rock as well as classic rock during their sunset series performance. when asked about the band’s favorite song to play, dwight named all of the classics, including “help me rhonda,” “good vibrations,” “hotel california,” “hey jude,” “california girls,” “kokomo,” “twist and shout” and “surfin’ u.s.a!” “who can really pick just one?” asks dwight.

this band of five is known for bringing good vibrations and family fun to every performance. “expect a super exciting, energetic and immersive musical experience that everyone can enjoy with world-class musicianship and vocals,” says dwight.

celebrating the last days of summer can work up an appetite.  we’ll be serving up our usual menu as well as the surf night menu specials, wipeout mai tai and the surfs up smash burger with a side of hang ten tater tots. grab a bite and a drink at one of the three full bars that are open during the event.

if you’ve been reading our blogs this summer you might have seen our butterfly of the week series. but this week, we have something extra special! the garden is excited to see the return of lebeau’s silk moth, making this our first moth of the week. these moths are some of the only land creatures to use transparency as a way to camouflage themselves from predators. moths are nocturnal creatures which means they are most active in the evenings. during the day you can still see them sleeping at the top of the pavilion or under some foliage. learn more about lebeau’s silk moth with the fun facts below before visiting them at soar – tropical butterflies. remember, this is the last month of soar so if you haven’t visited yet, now is your chance!

fun facts:

  • lebeau’s silk moth does not have a mouth and does not eat. it spends all its time reproducing.
  • because they do not have mouths, these moths only live for about a week
  • lebeau’s silk moth has small clear panes on its hindwings and its forewings that are used for camouflage
  • their wingspan is 3.5 – 4.75 inches
  • in nature, they can be found in south america, central america, mexico and the lower rio grande valley of texas

get ready to have the time of your life at sunset series’ abba night featuring the fabba show on august 22! the fabba show is a homage to the internationally beloved ’70s band, abba, and we are thrilled to welcome them to this year’s event.

the fabba show got its start in england where they toured europe before moving to the united states about 5 years ago. the artists involved fully take on the characters they portray. in fact, they call themselves a cast rather than a band.

“this cast really brings joy everywhere they go,” says marie-claire marshall, who plays “frida,” one of the lead singers. while performing abba’s music is a lot of fun, the band works hard to”pay attention to the details and try to sound as much like the swedish super group as possible… we also sing with accents as that really helps make it sound just like the originals,” says marie-claire.

the fabba show is an internationally acclaimed group and is known for their high-energy performances and family-fun shows. they mix flashy stage production with extravagant costumes and exciting choreograph to transports audiences back to the age of disco. guests can expect classics like “super trouper,” “waterloo,” “mama mia,” “dancing queen,” “sos,” “gimme gimme,” “fernando” and “take a chance on me.” even after naming several well-known songs, marie-claire says there are a lot of surprises in the set.

while the fabba show brings all the fun, they also love bringing in the audience with audience participation. they also have one request for everyone attending: “if you have any ’70s clothes, please dress up!”

all that dancing and singing is sure to work up an appetite. the night will include specialty meny items,  the dancing queen dirty shirley and swedish meatball hero, in addition to our regualr menu options from dottie’s in the koi pond. food and drinks will be served throughout the evening at each of our full bars.

sunset series’ abba night is sold out but you can still join us for sunset series’ surf night featuring ride the tide on august 29. tickets for sunset series can be found here

our soar butterfly of the week is a fan-favorite here at the garden. the blue morpho (also known as morpho peleides) caught the attention of last year’s soar visitors with its size, activity and fondness to land on unsuspecting guests, so we knew we needed to bring it back this year. and with all the attention this species gets inside the pavilion, we thought it was the perfect choice for our soar butterfly of the week. here are some fun facts about the blue morpho so you can truly get to know this special member of the garden family.

fun facts

  • blue morphos are part of the nymphalidae family.
  • their estimated lifespan is about a month.
  • they can be found in their natural habitat – the rainforests of south america, mexico and central america.
  • adults are frugivores, or fruit feeders, and often feed on rotting fruits. unlike most butterflies, they don’t visit flowers for nectar.
  • while we find their brilliant blue wings stunning, the color is caused by a diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings, which scares away predators.
  • when their wings are closed, you’ll notice eyespots on the underside of the wing, which help them camouflage in the forest and scare predators. the number of eyespots varies on each butterfly.
  • morpho peleides is the most common of the morpho species.
  • they are big! their wingspan ranges from 3.0 to 7.9 inches.

want to see one for yourself? make sure to get your tickets to soar today!

the garden relies on generous donations from our members, visitors and community to keep access to our 87 acres open for all and to provide unique horticultural experiences that help people find connections with nature. please help us continue this mission for years to come by considering a gift to the garden. you can do so here.

if you’ve been to soar lately, you’ve probably seen the rusty-tipped page butterfly fluttering through the pavilion. as the name suggests, these butterflies have rusty orange tips on the top of their front wings, and the rest of the wings are black except for the cream stripe that separates the two other colors. these colors are an important part of the rusty-tipped page’s survival. to learn why, read the fun facts below before coming to the garden to seeg them up-close and personal at soar.

fun facts:

  • orange, black and white are ofen used by prey animals, like butterflies, to warn predators that they are poisonous and not worth eating.
  • ruty-tipped pages are closely related to malachite butterflies. while they look very different as adults, their chrysalids are almost identical.
  • the rusty-tipped page is considered a “new world butterfly” meaning that it is primarily found in the western hemisphere, specifically the americas.
  • they feed on the nectar of plants like lantana as well as rotting fruit.
  • in nature, they can be found near water in tropical habitats.
  • their wingspan is 2.5 – 3 inches wide.
  • it’s called a rusty-tipped page because of the rust color on the tips of its front wings.

acoustic soul express is giving a soulful twist to r&b at sunset series on august 15, one of our final events of the season! we’re excited to have a local band from long beach join us. so we’re sharing a bit of their musical journey below.

acoustic soul express is a duo that has been performing together for 5 years “mostly covering r&b, from motown to present with some hip-hop, pop and blues classics,” says ashanti dykes when describing their sound. “i play the chords, melodies, basslines and percussion – all on acoustic guitar. i also do a little background singing,” he continues. chad bishop is the lead vocalist and he also plays guitar and trombone.

“guests can expect to sing, dance and hear a few jazz and classical pieces in-between,” says ashanti of their sunset series performance. “i often play a little beethoven, joplin, brubeck or spanish guitar classics. i also accompany chad when he plays trombone.” but his favorite song to preform is stevie wonder’s sir duke because he enjoys the way the horn sounds on the guitar and the energy the song brings to the audience.

before forming acoustic soul express, ashanti was a local music teacher. “i’ve taught many great students in palos verdes since the ’90s at pv music house (formerly amuse), so i’m hoping to see some of them and their families. i also taught music at rolling hills country day school right next door to 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 .” so if a former music teacher by the name of mr. dyke rings a bell, come by and watch him in his element.

the evening will also include specialty menu items, r&b manhattan and buttermilk chicken and waffles, in addition to our usual menu items. food and drinks can be found at all three of our full bars.

we’re entering our last month of sunset series, which means it’s your last chance to enjoy music and fun in the garden before school starts. we’re keeping the party going by giving modern hits a classic twist! join us for our superstar sitar night on august 8.

superstar sitar features a familiar friend, ronobir lahiri. and this year we’re excited to share more about his journey as a musican.

ronobir lahiri was just a teen when he began studying the classical indian sitar under the guidance of sri deepak choudhuri in calcutta, india. he played classical music for over 20 years before he began experimenting with incorporating the sitar into contemporary electronic and popular music, finding a truly unique sound.

“my music is a joyful expression of my most favorite and familiar songs throughout my life, arranged with my sitar playing lead in a style that blends indian classical improvisation with western narrative guitar solo. the intersection of ravi shankar, jerry garcia and miles davis, with the articulate clarity of carlos santana,” says lahiri.

for this sunset series performance, lahiri says, “i’ll play all my favorite songs, and tell you some stories of my experience in life and the arts. and i’m bringing my whole family.” but don’t expect the same performance as last year. ronobir is constantly updating his routine with modern hits. “my favorite songs are always the newest ones in my repertoire, because i’m still working them out in performance, and i often surprise myself,” says lahiri.

ronobir has been featured on albums from katy perry, ziggy marley and lil nas x and has been casted in several television series from “this is us” to “grey’s anatomy” and “desperatehousewives.” but he says his best achievement is his family. “my kids are both turning into interesting musicians and people, and i’m in awe to witness who they’re becoming.”

come experience lahiri’s music on august 8, which will also include speciality menu items including mixed tape mango lassi and sitar simosas.

ready to hear your favorite songs like you’ve never heard them before? tickets for sunset series’ superstar sitar night featuring ronobir lahiri can be found here

we’re about halfway through summer and our sunset series is in full swing! speaking of swing, join us this week for crooner night featuring jerry constanzo and his gotham city swingers on august 1.

playing music from “the great american songbook,” which includes songs from frank sinatra, dean martin and nat king cole, the band will “create an immersive experience that transports you back to an era when this sultry and swinging music was all the rave,” says jerry constanzo, the band leader himself.

constanzo developed his love for jazz at a young age, learning how to play the saxophone by third grade and eventually playing in his father’s band, the memories of swing. then in 2003, constanzo found his calling card – bringing his musical idols to life. he started his own band and now, jerry constanzo and his gotham city swingers play in almost every major jazz and supper club on both the east and west coast, as well as in hawaii, canada and internationally. “i would have to say one of my favorite memories was performing for the king of morocco,” says constanzo.

jerry costanzo has garnered acclaim among jazz and swing enthusiasts for his rendition of classic tunes. “costanzo and his swinging pals know how to grab the vegas vibe that most of us have heard about but never were old enough to really experience. it’s not a timepiece, just a good time that doesn’t try to recreate, but exists in its own place bringing some authenticity along for the ride,” says chris spector, editor and publisher of midwest record.

“it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that jerry costanzo is on par with living legends like tony bennett and the like. his love for the classic jazz repertoire is unquestionable and his musical skill set is more than ample. in the realm of traditional song interpreters it doesn’t get much better!” says jazz inside magazine.

complete the night with our speciality menu items, whisky side car and a chicken or shrimp po boy sandwich. these speciality menu items and our usual food and beverage items will be available all night at both of our full service bars.

it’s another beautiful week in our butterfly pavilion! if you’ve already been to soar – tropical butterflies, you’ve probably seen this week’s butterfly of the week. and if you haven’t been yet, what are you waiting for?

this week’s butterfly of the week is the cattleheart butterfly. these butterflies have a wingspan of 3-4 inches and live for about two weeks. while both males and females have clusters of red on their hindwings, males have shorter, broader white spots on their forewings. below are some more fun facts about this garden family member. after you read about them, make sure to come meet them in person.

fun facts

  • many people believe that the cattleheart butterfly got its name because the red markings on its hindwings look like a cow’s heart.
  • they can be found in the americas, from mexico all the way to costa rica.
  • as caterpillars they eat toxic plants that make them poisonous and protect them from predators. as adult butterflies, some of the toxins stay in their bodies, making them unpleasant to eat.
  • cattlehearts are part of the family papilionidae which means they are a type of swallowtail even though they’re missing the “tail” part of their hindwings.

last year, the palos verdes symphonic band was on trend playing music from the popular netflix series, “bridgerton,” which features orchestral renditions of pop songs. this year, they are bringing classic movies to life by playing soundtracks by the famous composer john williams during the sunset series on july 25.

williams is known for creating the famous scores from movies like “indiana jones,” “jurassic park,” “star wars,” “jaws” and more. the music of john williams evokes a wide range of emotions, from the majesty of “star wars” to the whimsical charm of “harry potter.”  “guests can expect to hear soundscapes that are timeless and instantly recognizable,” says the band’s representative, carol levi.

the pv symphonic band is a garden regular, performing at our past sunset series. levi shares that they are “thrilled to perform under the open sky and stars” and “relish the picturesque setting among the grass and open sky, where families and friends can stretch out on a blanket, enjoy the music, and even dance barefoot in the grass.”

the pv symphonic band was founded over 60 years ago and has brought concert band music to the south bay ever since. the band consists of 60 amateur and professional musicians from the community. from teachers to engineers, physicians, and former collegiate and military band members, this ensemble plays for the residents of palos verdes and surrounding neighborhoods.

the night will also include specialty food and drink items to fit the theme including a dark side nigroni and a jurrasic french dip sandwich. these speciality menu items and our usual food and beverage items will be available all night at both of our full service bars.

for everyone who missed out on beatlemania, we created a special sunset series night just for you. join us on july 18 and be transported back to the ’60s with a performance from the beatunes, a band dedicated to playing the beatles music exactly as it was played almost 50 years ago.

the beatunes is made up of four incredible musicians whose resumes span tribute and original bands, studio musicians and music producers, scoring music for films and even acting. tim piper, vocalist and bass player, has played the role of john lennon in several television productions about the beatles.

as professionals and fans, these musicians are constantly working to replicate the beatles’s music live as the band assures that “..every sound you hear at a beatunes concert is played live by the band.”

not only are they talented artists, but they have all been beatles fans since childhood. “after seeing the ed sullivan show, the beatles ruined my future medical career,” says lead guitarist and vocalist berington van campe, who has made a career scoring feature films and documentaries.

you won’t find tracks, wigs or costumes during the beatunes performance at sunset series on fab four night. instead, you’ll get timeless music created by the beatles just as they intended you to hear it.

coming together over the beatles and singing along to all their songs can build an appetite. make sure to stop by dottie’s in the koi pond for some refreshments. try this night’s specials, a let it be lemon drop and a yellow submarine sandwich. or enjoy one of our regular menu items and your favorite drink from one of our full bars.

while this is afterparty’s first appearance at sunset series, the band has played together for 15 years with some of their recent clients being microsoft, disney and toyota. “donny (goldberg), the lead singer, has been a musician his entire life – 50 years,” says donny’s assistant, blake phillips.

their favorite era to rock out to is the ’80s but afterparty’s sound spans the decades. playing hits from as far back as the ’60s, all the way to today’s top 40, they have something for everyone. “we look forward to entertaining all of you, and hope to see you dancing on the dance floor!” says donny.

after dancing and singing to all your favorite songs you might have worked up an appetite. make sure to stop by one of our three bars – staghorn, dottie’s or the vip bar – for some refreshments including our dance party night specials – the south bay spritz and a walking taco. these specials will be served in addition to the full bar and regular food iteams throughout the night.

the 4th of july is this thursday and while we don’t have a sunset series scheduled, we have some activities to do before the fireworks begin. july is the best time to see the summer-blooming flowers from our exhibit bloom!, and our live butterfly exhibit, soar – tropical butterflies. for those who want to stay on the holiday theme, we suggest going on a self-guided plant expedition to find flowers that are the same color as the american flag or look for flowers that look like fireworks (more info below!). the garden will be open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. for general admission tickets, click here.

things to do in the garden on the 4th of july

1. search for these red, white and blue flowers in the garden: flowers come in all colors, including the united states’ national colors of red, white and blue. below are a few examples but there are plenty more throughout the garden. bring a friend and see how many red, white and blue flowers you can find.

bongevilla and hybrid canna (canna x generalis)

mexican olive and matilija poppy (romneya coulteri)

cleveland sage selection (salvia clevelandii ‘betsy clebsch’) and plumbago

2. find flowers that look like fireworks:
just like flowers bloom in all different colors, they also bloom in a variety of shapes. the flowers below remind us of fireworks with their round shape and pointed petals. this is a great activity for those who want to celebrate the day without the loud booming sounds that follow or little ones who might not be awake for the fireworks.

passionflowers

dahlias

coast lily

3. see bloom!:
this exhibit is a celebration of nature and an invitation to tap into your senses. not only are all our flowers visually stunning, but many of them also have delightful scents. with a variety of photo moments and flowers blooming around every corner, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beauty at every step. with spring being a little colder than we expected, our flowers really didn’t begin blooming until closer to summer – so we decided to extend bloom! through august. for more information click
here.

dorothy and john bohannon rose garden

4. experience soar – tropical butterflies:  this exhibit will take you through a butterfly’s lifecycle, starting in the host and nectar garden where visitors can see native butterflies lay eggs and caterpillars eat before turning into a chrysalis. the exhibit continues at the emergence chamber where visitors may see one of our tropical butterflies emerge from its pupa. the exhibit ends with a walk through the pavilion where visitors are surrounded by hundreds of fluttering butterflies. soar is at its peak in july because the butterflies are the most abundant and active during the hot summer months. for more information, click here.

the countdown to sunset series is on with our first night taking place next week on june 20. while the food and music have changed over the year’s, one aspect of the night remains – ms. allison’s kids’ zone.

since the beginning of this program, ms. allison has been the ring leader of the kids’ zone in the lower meadow every thursday night, offering another way for guests – especially those young at heart – to enjoy the night. she creates interactive fun for all ages with things like parachutes, obstacle courses, lawn bowling, bubble dance parties and musical games. have a child who would rather read or an infant who wants to get in on the fun? ms. allison creates spaces for them, too.

“people who know me often say i have boundless energy. when it comes to children, fun is my middle name,” says ms. allison, who’s full name is allison schmitz.  “my goal is to provide positive childhood memories. as a native of the peninsula, i’m deeply involved in our community. i am a full-time tk teacher in palos verdes, teach mommy & me classes, plan corporate events, organize kids’ parties and facilitate private youth centered activities and events. .. my goal has always been to positively impact children’s lives and contribute to their happiness and well-being.”

before joing us for the sunset series, ms. allison instructed our movin ‘n groovin class which gave children a safe way to play and socialize in the garden.

while this is ms. allison’s third year participating in the sunset series, this year will have an extra twist. ms. allison will be incorporating each night’s theme into the kids’ zone activities. for example, jimmy buffett night will feature a banner that reads “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” and toy parrots perched in the surrounding trees.

“i am thrilled to hear all the positive feedback from excited families anticipating summer starting so they can attend again,” says ms. allison regarding the return of the sunset series. “it really is an event the whole family can enjoy!”

while ms. allison brings the fun, she asks that parents “chaperone their child at all times” and keep the toys in the kids’ zone.

playing in the area will definitely work up an appetite ,so make sure to check out dottie’s in the koi pond for something to eat. each week will have themed food and drink specials in addition to a full bar and other food options available throughout the night.

our sunset series is kicking off on june 20 and will run every thursday night through august 29. but if country music is your jam, you won’t have to wait long to enjoy some classic tunes under the summer sky! put on those cowboy hats and join us june 27 for country night featuring the canyon brothers band.

if you attended the first year of our sunset series, these guys may look familiar as they performed then as well.

“while some of us have been playing together for over a decade, this iteration of the band started in 2020 in the early pandemic days. we had lots of time to practice! we then started branching out and playing weddings and private parties,” says bandmember andy keathley.

while country music can mean a lot of different things to people, they describe their sound as “classic era country, as well as ’90s country.” they are a “guitar-driven band who loves to rock and get audiences dancing.” their favorite songs to perform are those by merle haggard, vince gill and alan jackson.

as with many country bands, they are used to playing to audiences that are dancing and singing along – something they want to encourage our sunset series guests to do as well. “we encourage everyone to wear your cowboy boots, cowboy hats and don’t be afraid to sing along,” says andy.

with all of that dancing and singing, you may need a bite to eat or something to drink. country night’s specialty food and drink items will be sweet tea moonshine and pulled-pork sandwiches, but there will also be a full bar and additional food and beverage available throughout the night.

ready to join the party? grab your tickets for county night here! if you want to get a little taste of what’s in store, watch the video below!

you may need to look closely to find this week’s butterfly of the week, which is much smaller than our other butterflies inside the pavilion. with their wings closed they look like dried leaves and can easily be overlooked. that is until they open their wings to reveal bright neon blue. do you know what species we’re talking about? our butterfly of the week is the blue wave butterfly! read more fun facts below to learn all about the blue wave butterfly, then see them in person at soar – tropical butterflies.

fun facts:

  • blue wave butterflies have shades of brown and grey speckling the outer part of their wings allowing them to camouflage themselves as tree bark or old leaves.
  • the top of their wings are iridescent blue/purple with white stripes and dots. the iridescence allows the color of the wings to appear as dark as black or as bright as neon blue, depending on how the sun is reflecting off of them.
  • they are a smaller butterfly with a wingspan of 1-1.5 inches
  • they can be found from mexico to honduras, costa rica, panama, venezuela, ecuador and peru.
  • blue wave butterflies prefer the juice from ripe fruit over nectar from a flower, so if you’re looking for them at soar, make sure to check the feeding trays.

want to see one for yourself? make sure to get your tickets to soar today!

the first night of this year’s sunset series is less than a month away and we are thrilled to share what we have in store. in honor of the life and legacy of jimmy buffett, we thought it would only be fitting to kick off this summer-time series off with a tribute to the “margaritaville” singer with mark wood and the parrot head band on june 20.

mark wood has been playing jimmy buffett’s music since 1976, with the parrot head band playing together since 1999. they opened for buffett at the verizon amphitheater and have played with coral reefer band members. when asked about the band’s performance at sunset series, mark wood shared:

“it’s a wonderful way to begin to come to grips with jimmy’s passing; all of us together, singing and reliving jimmy’s stories. what i have come to realize is that even though jimmy’s not here with us in body, his spirit lives on in the legacy of his stories, his songs and in each and every one of us who have loved, lived and experienced them in our own personal way!”

jimmy buffett’s music is filled with lyrics about enjoying the best parts of life. mark wood and parrot head band plans to finish their set with an encore of jimmy’s “lovely cruise,” the perfect send-off.

start summer with a drink in our garden paradise and a tribute to jimmy buffett. the night will also include specialty food and drink items to fit the theme including margaritas and come thursday jerk chicken tacos.

this week’s butterfly of the week is the doris longwing. this butterfly is extra special because it comes in a variety of colors. while all doris longwings have white or cream spots on the edge and middle of their primary wings, their hind wings can range from orange, blue, red or bright cream. identifying them in the wild can be tricky but you can always ask our employees and volunteers located in the butterfly pavilion for help. make sure to read the other fun facts below before visiting the doris longwing butterfly at soar!

fun facts:

  • doris longwing butterflies are considered polymorphic, meaning there is more than one wing color variation for this butterfly. polymorphism is a result of having more than one possibility of a trait for a gene. it’s the same reason dogs of the same breed are born in a variety of colored coats.
  • doris longwing butterflies can be found from central america to the amazon
  • they have a wingspan of 2.5-3.5 inches
  • there are multiple subspecies of doris longwing butterflies. each one has slightly different colors or patterns on their wings.
  • male doris longwings are smaller and more vibrant than females, which are duller and have larger, rounder wings

there are flowers everywhere in the garden right now! the flowers featured in this week’s blog are only a fraction of the flowers we have in bloom. before exploring the rest of the garden, make sure to stop by the koi pond and palm circle. the japanese water iris located on the pond’s edge is at the end of its bloom so we highly suggest seeing this flower before it’s gone for the year. palm circle has a new addition that is out of this world. the ‘night sky’ petunias are dark purple with white dots and look just as their name suggests, a sky full of stars. listen to the rest of georgiann keller’s audio blog below to learn more about what’s blooming in the garden this week. then invite a friend for a day out in nature and try to find what’s blooming in person.

the dorothy and john bohannon rose garden is at its peak! from now until june, the roses will be at their best with another peak taking place in october. a bloom this beautiful brings up a lot of questions, so we decided to take on some of the frequently asked questions regarding the rose garden! take a look below and then be sure to come see them in full bloom.

  • what are the most fragrant roses in the garden?
when you think of roses, a specific fragrance may come to mind. but did you know roses can have a variety of scents while some don’t actually have a scent at all? below are our top 3 roses for powerful fragrance:

    • from left to right:
      • ‘mr. lincoln’: located in the formal section (middle) of the rose garden, the ‘mr. lincoln’ rose has the classic rose scent. it’s not the most vigorous plant and is not always in bloom, but when it is, its large red/magenta flowers are hard to miss.
      • double delight’: located in the formal section (middle) of the rose garden, this rose smells like canned lychee. like ‘mr. lincoln,’ this plant is also not very vigorous and is not always in bloom.  they are located along the left cabana when you enter the rose garden from the promenade.
      • ‘huntington’s 100th anniversary’: located in the modern section (side closest to the desert collection), ‘huntington’s 100th anniversary’ smells very soapy and on warm days the scent wafts up the path. it is often in bloom and has cream flowers with pink and purple tinges. it’s planted along the path (right side) headed towards the tropical planting.

  •
  • which roses are the easiest to grow?
the horticulture department does its best to keep the roses as happy as possible and even then we still have finicky hybrids that select themselves out of the garden. this is because some hybrids are not suited to our microclimate. here are 3 low-maintenance varieties that do well in our climate to help you save time and money:

    • knock out® series (seen above). they were bred to be very disease-resistant and easy to care for. it doesn’t look like the classic rose we’re all familiar with but it grows in a variety of colors! we have four kinds planted:
      • the original knock out® are planted on both sides of the steps flanking the fountain in the rose garden
      • knock out® orange glow are planted along the edge of the rose garden lawn beds
      • knock out® peachyare planted along the outer path of the pollination section of the rose garden
      • knock out® blushingroses are planted in the pollination garden across from staghorn
    •
    •
  •

    • sunbelt® series (above). they were bred to be very heat and disease resistant. they are easy to care for and have more of that classic rose look. we have one kind planted:
      • sunbelt® desmond tutu™ are planted in the pollination garden across from the geometric beds and soar. it is a rich, red rose with a light, fresh scent.

    • julia child™ is a very consistent and hardy rose with butter-yellow flowers and a nice licorice fragrance. they are planted along the edge of the beds in the rose garden across from the garden of the senses. you can also find two on the edge of lower meadow across from dottie’s.

  • how do you get the roses to bloom so much?
our secret is an annual care schedule that our horticulture team follows. terry, our director of living collections, shared a simplified version below, but the absolute best way to learn is to volunteer at the garden!

    • prune january-february and reduce your rose plants by 1/3 to 1/2 of the plant’s original size while removing all the leaves.
    • fertilize monthly with (organic) fertilizer from march-october.
    • deadhead and lightly prune as needed from may-october.
    • let your roses rest in november-december – no feeding or pruning!

  • can i take cuttings or petals?
picking flowers and removing plant material is not allowed in the garden and for good reason. first and foremost, many of our roses are patented by the horticultural industry so its actually illegal to propagate them from cuttings. secondly, the plants in the garden could be harboring pests and diseases that could be unknowingly spread to natural areas and gardens outside of the garden. and lastly, we want to ensure that everyone gets the chance to see the flowers.

  • where can i buy roses for my own garden?
it’s best to buy all of your plants from local stores and nurseries. this ensures that the plant you take home can grow in your microclimate. that being said, these are our two favorite spots:

    • the armstrong garden center on crenshaw blvd is one of our top choices because it is close and has a large selection of roses. plus, current members of 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 receive a 10% discount.
    • otto & sons in fillmore has a greater selection of roses and expert staff, so head there if you don’t mind the drive.

want to see our roses in person? click here for tickets to the garden. if you miss this peak – don’t worry! roses and their companion plants will still continue to bloom through the summer months.

every year the american public gardens association, of which we are a part of, dedicates a week to encouraging the public to spend time in public gardens – whether it be taking a walk, buying a plant, or volunteering. public gardens are vital to their communities, and we hope you all feel compelled to help support 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 during  this year’s go public garden days happening may 10 through may 19.

to encourage the public’s participation, apga has put together a public garden photo scavenger hunt that will take place throughout the week. each day will have a different theme for participants to “go find” at their local public garden. once the item has been found, take a photo and post it across your social media channels using #gopublicgardens and #scbgarden.

the themes are as follows:

  • friday, may 10: go to your local public garden or arboretum and take a selfie or photo of your favorite display garden or favorite tree!
  • saturday, may 11: go find a plant or flower that is new to you!
  • sunday, may 12: go find a pollinator!
  • monday, may 13: national tulip day: if tulips are still in bloom, go take a photo.
  • tuesday, may 14: go find and take a picture of a succulent!
  • wednesday, may 15: go take a photo of a conservatory!
  • thursday, may 16: national love a tree day: go take a photo of a flowering tree!
  • friday, may 17: go find a fern!
  • saturday, may 18: go take a photo of a spring flower!
  • sunday, may 19: go ask a staff member at your local public garden to show you their favorite plant or flower. take a photo of their favorite plant or flower or ask if they could be in the picture with you.

the apga and 阿根廷vs沙特赔率 will share as many photos as possible across our instagram and facebook stories. thanks for playing and we look forward to seeing what you “go find!” for more information about the public gardens photo scavenger hunt, click here.

soar 2024 is officially open, which means it’s time to restart our butterfly of the week feature. each week we will highlight a butterfly that can be seen during the  exhibit. learn all about it in advance to enhance your experience once you meet it in person.

our first butterfly of the week is the blue frosted banner, also known as catonephele numilia. if you’re looking at the photo above of the two wildly different butterflies, you may have thought we were highlighting two species this week, but actually, those are both blue frosted banners. adult blue frosted banners have sexual dimorphism, which is when sexes of the same species have different characteristics, not just different reproductive parts.  for the blue frosted banners, males are black with six orange dots on the dorsal surface of the wings, while females are black with a vertical light yellow stripe on both wings. so when you come into the pavilion, make sure you’re on the lookout for both! here are some additional fun facts about this member of the garden family.

fun facts

  • blue frosted banners are part of the nymphalidae family.
  • their estimated lifespan is about a month.
  • they can be found in their natural habitat in central and south america.
  • adults feed on rotten fruits, while caterpillars feed on alchornea species.
  • they can usually be seen flying close to the ground and close to the ripe fruits and flowers.
  • their wingspan is about 65-80 mm.

want to see one for yourself? make sure to get your tickets to soar today!

soar – tropical butterflies has returned for a fourth year but it’s not the only place to see butterflies in the garden! the pollination garden is another great place to see butterflies out in the wild.

the butterflies found out in the garden are extra special because they are native to southern california. so why do they love the pollination garden so much? we planted the area with native plants that our local butterflies love! these plants serve as host plants that provide food for caterpillars and nectar plants that provide a yummy bite to eat for adult butterflies. our native plants were sourced from  both the palos verdes peninsula land conservancy (pvplc) and the theodore payne foundation (tpf). pvplc is a hyper-local organization dedicated to restoring the native plant communities of palos verdes and tpf is dedicated to raising awareness for california native wild flowers and plants. some of the native plants that can be found in the pollination garden are yarrow, california poppies, narrowleaf milkweed, and sea cliff buckwheat. these plants attract monarchs, swallowtails, marine blues and cloudless sulfurs, just to name a few.

butterflies aren’t the only critters you’ll find in the pollination garden. you’ll see ground squirrels, bees and hummingbirds as well. our umbrellas and chairs in the area also make the pollination garden a great place to take a quick break before exploring the rest of the garden.

once you’re ready to leave the pollination garden, you can visit soar to see non-native butterflies for a well-rounded butterfly visit! tickets to soar – tropical butterflies, click here

we are excited that soar – tropical butterflies is reemerging for its fourth year! we’re bringing back some of our visitors favorite butterflies, including the popular blue morpho. we also have some new programming we are excited about, including our new parent & me: butterflies 101 class. starting may 3, we will be offering a parent and me class where you and your little one can learn all about butterflies, make a butterfliy identification booklet and end with a 30 minute visit in the soar pavilion. this class will take place throughout soar on select fridays. learn more about this new class and what else you can expect from this year’s exhibit below.

new this year

  • as mentioned above, this year guests can join our new parent & me: butterflies 101 class happening from 10 to 11 a.m. on select fridays, including may 3, 10 and 24. guests will get an up close and personal guided experience through soar – tropical butterflies. each child will use a magnifying glass, notebook, pencil, and crayons to record their findings and create a their own butterfly identification guide! all supplies needed will be provided. this class will take place in rain or shine! to join parent & me: butterflies 101, click here
  • we are bringing back the soar photo pass ticket but with one change. soar photo pass tickets will be available on the last wednesday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. this ticket will allow you to bring in additional camera equipment and allow more time in the pavilion to guarantee you get “the shot.”  for photo pass tickets, please click here.
  • you can be part of the exhibit! gifts to our annual flourish fund will be recognized on our wall of wings feature outside of the exhibit. learn more about it here
  • both the host and nectar garden and the pavilion have been replanted by our horticulture team.
  • the species you’re most likely to see inside the pavilion include:
    • owl butterflies
    • blue morphos
    • golden long wing
    • blue frosted banner
    • giant swallowtail
    • rusty tipped page
    • malachite
    • gold rim swallowtail

know before you go

  • wearing bright colors, like the colors of your favorite flowers, can attract the butterflies to come closer to you, and maybe even land on you!
  • no strollers or wagons are allowed inside the pavilion, but there is stroller parking available behind the pavilion. ask an employee or volunteer if you need help finding stroller parking.
  • there are butterfly souvenirs available for purchase at our kiosk in palm circle.
  • on cloudy days, butterflies will not be as active as they are on sunny days.  butterflies are a lot like little solar collectors.  butterflies use the energy from the sun to get them moving.  if it is a cloudy day, keep a close eye on the undersides of trees and bushes for roosting butterflies (this is a great way to get an up-close look at them). ask a soar guide to help you find them inside the pavilion!
  • consider bringing a small pair of binoculars with you, to get a better view of butterflies perched high in the exhibit.
  • soar begins before you enter the pavilion with an emergence chamber to view pupae, and a newly planted garden area that features host and nectar plants to naturally attract butterflies and other pollinators.

 while inside the pavilion

  • slow down and observe. butterfly spotting takes patience!
  • watch where you’re walking. the butterflies may go to the ground for warmth.
  • ask questions – staff and volunteers want to help you experience and understand the magic of butterflies.
  • visit the emergence chamber, where you can watch new butterflies break out of their pupal cases. you might have to wait for a while to see one emerge, but it is well worth it.
  • take lots of pictures! where else will you have that many butterflies within reach of your camera lens? be sure to tag @scbgarden in your instagram posts and use hashtags #soartropicalbutterflies and #scbgarden
  • check for hitchhikers before you exit the butterfly pavilion. ask a friend to make sure no butterflies have perched on your back. staff and volunteers will help with this as well.
  • food or drinks are not allowed in the pavilion.
  • stay on the pathways and avoid stepping onto the plant beds.
  • avoid touching the plants or picking the flowers.
  • do not pick up or handle the butterflies, unless a staff member invites you to do so.

faq’s

  1. what type of tropical butterflies are in the pavilion? there are many types of butterflies from the equatorial tropics, and it is changing weekly depending on availability with the possibility of having up to 98 species throughout the whole soar opening! come back often to see the different species throughout the season!
  2. are the butterflies collected from the wild?  no! butterfly farmers raised all of the butterflies in this exhibit. butterflies are raised on these farms specifically for use in butterfly exhibits. butterfly farming helps with butterfly conservation education and outreach, like birdwing butterflies, some of which are endangered or threatened in their native habitat.
  3. where are the butterflies in this exhibit from? the tropical butterflies came from farms in the united states and costa rica.
  4. how many butterflies are in the pavilion? at any given time, there are about 300-500 butterflies in the pavilion. on average there are about a dozen different species at one time inside the pavilion.
  5. how long do the butterflies live? each species has a different life span. feel free to talk to our staff and volunteers in the pavilion to learn more!
  6. how often do we receive pupa/butterfly shipments? shipments of pupae are received weekly.
  7. where did the plants inside the pavilion come from? they were purchased from local nurseries, so they are plants you can find and plant in your own garden.
  8. are any of the pavilion plants (inside or outside) available for purchase at the garden? no, not at this time. we do have some plants for sale that can be found in the garden, but we do not have host or nectar plants available for purchase at this time.
  9. why aren’t they flying around?  during cold mornings and cloudy/rainy days, butterflies will not be as active as they are on sunny days. butterflies are a lot like little solar collectors and use the energy from the sun to get them moving. if it is a cold/cloudy day, keep a close eye on the undersides of trees and bushes for roosting butterflies (this is a great way to get an up-close look at them).
  10. what happens to all of the butterflies at the end of the exhibit run? they are allowed to live out the rest of their lives in the exhibit. due to usda regulations, these butterflies (that were raised by butterfly farmers) cannot be released into the wild due to the potential of introducing pathogens to our local/native butterfly populations as well as potentially affecting our local/native plant communities.
  11. what do butterflies eat? butterflies eat many different things. butterflies can only eat liquids because their mouthparts resemble a drinking straw (proboscis).  foods include flower nectar, rotten fruit, plant sap, dung, and even dead animals!
  12. can i touch them? do not try to grab butterflies or pick them up.  if a butterfly lands on you, that is ok.  enjoy the visit of the butterfly, but remember not to touch or grab the butterfly.
  13. why do the butterflies land on us? the butterflies may be attracted to floral perfumes or the color of your clothing.  the butterflies may also be looking for food (they do like sticky-faced kids and sweaty people).  yummy!
